Camping started on the "Gitzenweiler," only a few kilometres away from the Old Town of Lindau, more or less by accident in the 1960s, with travellers on their way south camping on and around the farm. As early as 1972, the GITZ was described as a top site in the magazine "Stern" because of its open-air pool.
If you think that 50 years is a long time, you should remember that we are on very interesting ground here, because camp life at GITZ began with the knight Ullrich zu Ebersberg in the year 1380. The Gitzenweiler Hof can look back on a history of 600 years. The "Gitzenweiler Höfe," first recorded in1384 in the Lindau city archive as an nobleman's estate , was later the residence of important mayors and respected citizens of Lindau.
At the time of the Peasants Revolt, the lands of Gitzenweiler gained brief historical importance due to their owner at the time, Dietrich Hurlewangen, who was the leader of the "Seehaufen" (bands of rebels from the north shore of Lake Constance).
The manor house, more than 300 years old in some parts, is a historic building still of importance today. It is now home to the Bavarian Inn. Around 1600, Gitzenweiler was owned first of all by Johann Andreas Heider and later by Daniel Heider - both sons of Valentin Heider, famous for, among other matters, initiating the Lindau Children's Festival.
Little was then heard of Gitzenweiler until the end of the 1960s, when word spread among travellers that there was a farm along the road to Italy where you could camp. Since then, the Lindau district of Gitzenweiler has been a favoured address among campers travelling through and a destination popular throughout Europe for spending the best season of the year.
We are always aiming for improvement, but it was still an honour for us to achieve the 'ADAC Superplatz' award. And at the same time a spur to greater things, to offer you an unforgettable holiday in the Campingpark Gitzenweiler Hof -close to nature and yet modern!
We are proud to have developed "Gitzenweiler" from the old nobleman's estate to the modern Camping Park that accommodates 20% of all overnight stays in the district of Lindau am Bodensee.
